ER Follow-Up Initiative
In September, Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center will unveil a new service to help patients receive the ongoing care they need after
a visit to our Emergency Department (ED). During visits to the ED, cardiology and orthopedic patients will receive a phone call to
schedule an appointment. Appointments will be made in a manner that best supports each patient’s needs while also following the
hospital’s on-call schedule.
Patient care liaisons will call patients post ER discharge to assist with follow-up specialty care
Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce that Veronica Ricca, RN, BSHA, chest pain
center coordinator, has achieved recognition as a certified cardiovascular care coordinator from the Society
of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC).
Veronica has demonstrated an enhanced skill set in team building, process improvement, strategic data
utilization, provider education and project management.The purpose of becoming a certified cardiovascular
care coordinator is to earn recognition as an individual who has acquired the knowledge base and skill set
to be successful in the coordinator role.The objectives of certification are to:
• Promote standards of competency for coordinators in the leadership role
• Promote professional and hospital success by helping coordinators define and obtain the requisite
knowledge and skills to fulfill their responsibilities effectively
• Provide special recognition to those coordinators who demonstrate mastery of an acquired body
of knowledge and skills in the cardiovascular continuum of care through successful completion of
the certification process

diagnostic criteria for various hypertensive disorders
• Discuss management and complications of preeclampsia,
superimposed preeclampsia, and HELLP syndrome
• Discuss management of acute severe hypertension
Baha M. Sibai, MD, an internationally-recognized researcher
and clinician in maternal-fetal medicine, is a a professor in the
Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive
Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at
Houston (UTHealth) Medical School.
Sibai is a leading authority in the care and treatment of women
with preeclampsia, eclampsia, rare syndromes and medical
emergencies during pregnancy and childbirth. He has published
more than 500 peer-reviewed articles and has an extensive
history of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) and Centers for Disease Control.
